Same-Sex Prom Couple Has Unexpected Street Encounter with 'Bros'

When "Good Morning America" segment producer Michael Del Moro saw that a teenage same-sex prom couple was about to wander into the sights of a group of young men yelling bawdy things at passersby, he worried that ugliness was about to erupt. What happened next prompted Moreno to take to Twitter for a "short thread" of surprising messages, Buzzfeed reports.

Moreno, who is openly gay, was out with his boyfriend and other family members after an early Mother's Day outing on Friday evening, May 11. His "short thread" commenced with the observation that the locale from which he was posting - Seaside Heights, New Jersey - was the sort of place "where - not so long ago - young men would shout the word 'f****t' out their car window as we'd stroll along the boardwalk."

Moreno took note of "a group of rowdy bros gathered on a rooftop bar obnoxiously yelling "KISS HER!" in unison at every apparent couple that passed by."

It being "prom season," Moreno's tweets noted, there were plenty of "apparent couples" for the group of young men to cheer. But then "an adorable teenage gay couple" dressed in tuxedoes appeared, and Moreno felt a reflexive twinge of concern for their safety. Moreno and his family were walking by the bar at the same moment the two boys were, and, Moreno tweeted, he and those with him "stopped to make sure the couple was okay as they walked by" because they were "worried that something might happen."

The young couple obliged and, Moreno tweeted, "both the rooftop crew and everyone else on the boardwalk just went absolutely wild for them and we all breathed a sigh of relief."

Buzzfeed shared information on the couple, as well, a pair of high schoolers named Theodore Vidal and Colin Beyers. They, too, were surprised by the warm response they got from the rooftop of "bros," having experienced bullying in their lives.

"After coming out to his friends and family in eighth grade, Vidal said his classmates bullied, attacked, and ignored him, telling him to 'end my life' and that 'he didn't belong here,' " Buzzfeed reported.

Beyers, by contrast, told the media that when he came out, he "got a positive reaction from family and close friends."

Love being love, things are better for the pair now they have found one another. "My life has changed because of him," Vidal told the media of Beyers. "He helps me live life to my fullest and that's what I am doing right now."

Beyers called the moment of support from the guys on the rooftop "one of those small victories that make the hard times worth it."

Buzzfeed posted a number of the couple's photos and reported that the two plan to travel to Greece together over the summer break.
